Chapter 10

Four weeks after turning Jonas over to Sterling Addington, Munson packed a bag. His wife, Kim, was crying in the kitchen. She tolerated his recent absences and ‘business trips’ despite his job not sending him on any, but she couldn’t bear the lies any longer. He didn’t blame her. No amount of apologizing or gifts could replace the trust he eroded. As much as he wanted to make it all right and tell her he was doing it to give her the better life she deserved, he couldn’t. His job with Silver Blade demanded utmost secrecy and all of his time, which left no room for honesty or his wife.

“You’re cheating on me?”

“Oh, god no, please believe that, Doll. I’m sorry. I have to go now, but I’ll be home soon, OK? I can tell you everything then.” He lied as he kissed her face, still so beautiful after all of these years. It broke him to know he was her kissing for the last time.

Hours later, he arrived at Silver Blade, having sobbed like a funeral mourner for the duration of the flight.

He was mourning.

It was the last day of his marriage, and the last time he could ever see her again. Soon she would mourn him, but at least his new Will and the payout she would receive from Silver Blade would prove he did everything for her, and he was faithful.

Rowena Calvin was waiting for him when he was shown into her office. "There are a few things we need to discuss before we can continue." She didn't rise to greet him. He sat across from the attractive woman with black satin hair and naturally rosy cheeks, finding himself unable to remove the question of her actual age from his thoughts.

“198, and no I don’t know how much longer, do you know how much longer you’re going to live?” She sighed with a perturbed expression on her face after reading his.

"You can read my mind?" He panicked like most would, second-guessing recent thoughts.

"Don't be foolish, Munson. I'm a Lycan, not a Psychic. That same question has been written on the faces of others over the years. It’s easy to read.”

“So, you are immortal.” Munson shifted to the next observation, “When Jonas told me his age-“

“Not immortal. It’s just the nature of our mutation. We heal faster than you, so many of the damage done to your bodies over years of living simply doesn’t happen to us. As a result, many of the issues you develop can’t develop in us.”

“I apologize for staring.” Munson glanced at the hands he was wringing in his lap.

"Let's get back to this, and we can get on with what we know." She grinned and immediately started again. "You will be expected to sign the disclosure agreements by the end of the day. The last of the agreements is also irrevocable but unlike the others. It directs us to facilitate your death for security purposes. It authorizes payouts to your family members and grants you the new identity we created for you.
